Marriage Allowance: check if you can transfer Personal Allowance

Marriage Allowance lets a non-taxpayer transfer 10% of their Personal Allowance to a basic-rate-taxpaying spouse or civil partner, cutting their tax bill by up to £252 in 2026/27. This checker uses HMRC 2026/27 thresholds to confirm eligibility and show your saving, including up to four years of backdating.

Who qualifies?

You qualify if one partner earns below the Personal Allowance and the other is a basic-rate taxpayer. It is not available where the higher earner pays the higher or additional rate. If you are eligible, you can apply directly on GOV.UK and backdate your claim.
